DISNEY TO CHARGE FOR STORY BOOKS ONLINE...
Disney is revealing a new addition to the Disney franchise this Tuesday. For around $75.00 a year you can have a prescription to read Disney story books online. The age range is from 3-12 years old. The storybooks will go from Winne the Pooh to Hannah Montana, the children can enjoy oldies and new storybooks. The controversy is , will this take away from the parent child time of story time before bed. I would rather have my dad snuggle next to me and read me my old Little Mermaid book then him pop out his IPhone and read to me. Who knows how this will work out.

eBooks are definitely making a strong impact on the publication world. For Disney to utilize this medium is a good business move. However, I do have to agree that it does take away from the tradition of reading a "book" you your kid. Now'adays it's "read a book from your laptop/netbook to your kids."
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting. I am partial to having parents read to their children at bedtime from an actualy book simplay because that is what I grew up on. However, I have to take into consideration about how the world is today. We live in a completely different time. Parents don't always have that constant time with their children like they once had. A lot of children's parents travel more than they probably should. I think its fair that children can call their mother or father before bed and have them read them a story no matter where they are. It does take away from the personal parent-child moments, but Disney is pretty clever for coming up the idea.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good idea for Disney. As a parent I would prefer the online stories instead of my child watching a movie.
ReplyDeleteI wrote about the same story, and I agree that it is kind of sad to imagine a child lying in bed with their laptop instead of their parents with a book in hand. But I do think it could be good, young kids are using the internet so much these days, hopefully if parents subscribe to things like Disney's offer, 10 and 11 year olds will spend more time reading than on MySpace and other sites that are inappropriate for kids that age.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this a good idea, at all. Disney is just looking for more ways to profit money.. like they need it anyways?
ReplyDeleteDisney is timeless; and the fact that now you can purchase their classic stories online to read takes away from the initial 'thrill' of Disney excitement. When I was little, I always looked forward to bedtime stories! Or even reading the story from the actual BOOK made me feel special, just to hold a book and be able to read it made me feel so smart. I think technology, in general, is going a little out of hand with everything its come up with now-a-days(i.e. Wii fitness, a fitness VIDEO GAME in the comfort of your own home? What is that?). I can't imagine children having to read a classic story like Cinderella online. It just doesn't seem right to me.
I think it'll have the same effect on kids no matter the form parents read it to them. Then again, if there are no pictures that could be a problem. Or are some of the stories chapter books? Maybe so. I don't think it'll be so bad.
